Additions to the Agenda: Ashlee Young, WeTHRIVE

New Business:
a. Ashlee Young, WeTHRIVE (A Hamilton County Public Health Department Initiative)
  • Step #1 occurred in 2013 with Evendale Council’s adopting of a resolution to become a WeTHRIVE Community. WeTHRIVE communities promote health, and future well-being among its residents and businesses.
  • The next step in this process is to establish a team within the community to promote this philosophy. For Evendale, that team is the Recreation Commission.
  • David Nichols and Michele Gottschlich have completed step #3 by completing a community health assessment. Copies of this assessment were given to commissioners for review and comment. The goal for a WeTHRIVE community is to be at level five on all of the community health assessments.
  • Step #4 is to develop an action plan for how Evendale will work towards improving community members’ health and well-being.
  • Ashlee will be involved with technical assistance, recognitions, learning collaborative forums, data assistance, marketing and promotional resources.
Old Business:
a. Lifestyle Essentials’ Monthly Report
  • As noted in the packet. Interaction with patrons has seemed to increase.
  • The Wellness Expo was very well attended. The department, Lifestyle Essentials, and the over twenty vendors, were all very pleased with the turn out. David and Lifestyles consider the event a success.
b.Evendale Bike & Pedestrian Master Plan
  • A copy of the finalized Bike & Pedestrian Master Plan will be placed on the village website under the Facilities tab.
  • In 2014, the department hopes to gain council’s recognition of the Bike & Pedestrian Master Plan. With council recognition, we can apply for grants to help with the more costly sections, such as along the Mill Creek which is our priority section. This is a three mile stretch along the creek, connecting the north end of town to the south end with many businesses, and nature, in between. On a smaller scale, signage will be added during road projects or at other points where people are biking.
Director’s Report:
  • David asked commissioners to think about capital items (large value) that they would like to see the department consider, and maybe purchase, in the future and for fiscal year 2015.
  • David also asked commissioners to consider, and add to, his 2014 goals and objectives for the department.
  • Kristen Maiden, Independent Providers Supervisor, has been approached with ideas for new programs that might be offered here at the recreation center.
  • The first program is Jeet Kune Do, a fighting art self defense system geared towards people 16 years and older. Kristen is confirming with our Tae Kwon Do instructor that he is okay with another martial arts class being offered.
  • Sherwin Anderson, basketball trainer, would like to team with a kinesiologist, and a ballet instructor, to work with basketball players to optimize the player’s movement on the court. Details and fees are still being worked out.
  • Commission is okay with both ideas.
  • David had his survey at the recent wellness expo. Several more were completed. New commission members were given a copy of the survey and asked to complete the survey.
  • The archery ranges to the north of soccer field 4 are complete. Evendale resident, Tim Fortner constructed the archery distance bollards and developed a program as part of his Eagle Scout requirements. Last fall, Tim received his Eagle rank.
Phi Lambda Pi Report:
  • Attendance is little lower than normal due to swimming season.
  • Many eighth graders are coming each week.
  • Recent activities have included flag football and a pot luck dinner.
  • Upcoming events include a movie night, and the annual Awards Night & Overnight event.
Open Discussion:
  • Georgia complimented the department on another wonderful Snow Much Fun Fest.
  • Our tennis pro, Tony Teufel attended the USTA Conferences and was awarded funds for tennis supplies. Tony will use this money to bring tennis to Evendale Elementary students in coordination with the gym teacher at the school.
  • At the recent OPRA (Ohio Parks & Recreation Association) Conference, Evendale resident Ken Puthoff was recognized as the 2013 Ohio Coach of the Year. Ken’s dedication to Evendale’s kids is outstanding and includes not only lessons for the sports field but also for life. Thank you Ken for your years of coaching our kids.
  • Kristen Maiden, Kim Pielage, and Nancy Hagner attended the conference classes and returned home with many new ideas, programs, and information. Branding and technology were present in many of the conference’s discussions.
  • The recent edition of the Running Spot News included our July 4th Conquer the Hill 10K entry form.
Motion to adjourn the meeting was made at 8:27am by Georgia Bergan; seconded by Mary Teufel. Motion approved
